The House on Oak Hill
The House on Oak Hill
Standing tall and proud, the House on Oak Hill looks right out of Montana or Colorado. In fact, Tom, the owner, and designer of the home, was inspired by a favorite cabin and was planning on building this very home in Bozeman, MT when he decided he wanted to be closer to his family in Red Wing and built the home here, instead.
The massive Douglas Fir beams and logs make this home feel right out of the mountains. The surrounding acres help the home feel secluded and away. Every time you drive up the driveway, it feels as if you’re on vacation. But, the great part is that you’re only minutes from town and you have city water and sewer. It’s the best of both city and country living.
When you enter the home, it’s clear that it was built with both love and precision. Light floods the rooms and dances on the walls. The large and expansive rooms are perfect for raising a family. It’s warm and cozy but light and airy at the same time, which is quite a feat. And with the warm breeze blowing through the windows, comes the soft whiney from the horses grazing in the lower pasture.
The massive 26 foot high stone fireplace in the living room welcomes you to sit for awhile. And the fireplace outside on the covered porch helps take the chill out of a cool evening. The home is perfect for entertaining. Throw open the doors to the many porches and you have even more space for family and friends.
The home took a year to build, as it isn’t easy sourcing lumber and logs here in the Midwest. The wall logs arrived on two semi-loads from Idaho, and the timber came from Oregon. There’s a little bit of history to the logs in the House on Oak Hill. The actress Meg Ryan had ordered them to build her own log home, but when her life changed, she canceled the order and the logs were then shipped to Red Wing, MN for this home.
Each room is unique and cleverly designed. The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, with Winona Stone countertops that pay homage to the local stone. Since the kitchen is open to the dining room and living room, the home feels open and spacious. There is a darling spiral staircase in the living room that leads up to an open loft where you can see Bald Eagles flying above through the skylight.
On the second floor, the generous master suite awaits. Several closets and a master bathroom with all the bells and whistles--including a workout area--creates a private oasis. Each of the other bedrooms are ready for your family to move right in.
In the lower level, there is plenty of room for billiards and a bar, and a bedroom is tucked right behind the beautiful fireplace. The walk out and high ceilings provide lots light and fresh air, so this area feels nothing like a typical run-of-the-mill basement.
Outside, the House on Oak Hill really shines. No matter the season, the house looks right at home. In the winter, the snow covers the hill in tranquil splendor, but ice and snow are automatically melted off the driveway and sidewalks with the flip of a switch. Spring reveals many woodland plants and animals. In the heat of summer, the covered porches and trees keep the home cool. And in the fall, the blaze orange and red leaves in the woods rustle in the quiet breeze that floats down the hill.
The 17 acres of woods and pasture all lead down to 1700 feet of pristine water in a stream filled with trout. There is room for two horses and a loafing shed that hold plenty of hay and provides protection from the elements. Birds of all sorts can be found on the property, and at the bird feeders next to the house.
At the bottom of the driveway, the shop is perfectly suited for a business or to store all of your favorite toys--even really big toys! The floors are heated, and there is even a small apartment on the second floor perfect for out of town guests that need a little privacy.
The House on Oak Hill is warm, welcoming, and ready for you to make it into your home. If you’ve longed for a house that is both town and country, rustic and elegant, and expansive yet cozy, look no further.
